01 Taft Yard   Leave a comment

In 2002 I visited the USA for the first time.

On the journey from the airport to our hotel, we passed over a railroad yard. I had family with me and exploration was out of the question. However, subsequent visits to Florida and an additional hire car enabled me to explore Florida railroads and further holidays had railroad days built into the itinerary.

These railroad days inspired me to buy some HO locomotives with sound, buy a DCC system and become a member of the NMRA.

A house move in 2006 meant the abandonment of my Whitley Bay Quayside model railway and the creation of my first USA themed layout – Taft Yard. This was a two level shelf layout with a helix to join the two levels.

The layout occupied a single garage.

I rushed the development of the layout. The garage was not prepared properly, the baseboards were not adequately braced and the “duckunder” proved to be a significant hinderance with the onset of arthritis in my right knee.
